I looked at the pricing of livestream and ustream the other day and am shocked that people actually pay this.   Livestream does not even offer a plan lower than $350 per month which will cut off most of the small to medium sized businesses. Ustream does offer an “affordable” $99/month plan (yayastream is $79/month) but at ustreams price you only get about 12.8 GB ($7.69 per gig!!) if you stream at 300 Kbps… compare that to the 156 GB you would get with yayastream…

So why the large disparity if all the services are about the same level of quality and have similar features like live video player, chat box, embeddable player, etc. ?

My Thoughts: Larger Venture Capital backed companies like ustream and livestream with large operations on the coasts need to support their high cost of rent, marketing campaigns, and equipment. They are also not recouping their costs on the “free ad-supported channels” which furthermore drives up the profit they need on their premium channels .

Yayastream does not have these heavy cost burdens so we can offer better deals because we run our offices lean here in Austin, TX (very lean!!).

Yayastream is MUCH cheaper but the magnitude depends on the stream rate, because Ustream and Livestream charge by “viewer hour”. So let’s look at a few scenarios to see who is cheaper and by how much:

Assumption #1:

Bandwidth can be controlled by the individual streaming the video using an encoder. We typically recommend streaming between 250Kbps and 300Kbps since the highest quality video most of your viewers will be able to pull down is around 300kbps or less, I went ahead and performed some calculations based on that stream rate and here is what I found (in terms of GB):

Assumption 2:

This is a big stretch but let’s just say all of your viewers happen to be able to see video at 500kbps… what would that mean in terms of cost?

Assumption 3:

Now what if everyone on the planet had SUPER SUPER fast internet (which they don’t) and we decided to stream at a rate of 1Mbps (in which the quality would not seem much different than 500kbps)?

The equipment is protected by pre-cut foam padding.  The foam is a very important part of protecting the equipment and keeping it organized and in the correct place.  The foam cut outs also make it easy to see if you forgot to repack a piece of equipment!!

The waterproof case is tough and professional.  These cases have been used by serious video professionals for decades.  Law enforcement and the military also use these cases too for really tough jobs… needless to say the case is the highest quality and very durable.

SOFTWARE:

We don’t stop at the hardware… We even include production software which you will need to enhance the quality of the production by adding customized headers, scoreboards, etc. Simply click broadcast in the top left corner and you are live!  Click again and you stop the broadcast.  This software also allows you to save the production on your hard drive.

Production Software like this typically costs over $1,500 on by itself.

LIVE PLAYER PAGE:

The Live Player Page is embeddable to your site or blog using one line of code.  Simply cut paste and broadcast your event to the world.  If you would like to generate revenue from your stream you could set up a Pay Per View stream. Here you see an example of what your player page could look like.  Typically we use a chat box but in this instance the customer wanted a live twitter feed.
